ROUND 1

9 Apr 2018 by Julia Wake

Not a bad start to season 2018, winning 2 out of 3 on Saturday at Ironbank. The senior colts got the day off to a great start with a thumping 106 point win. Tyler Westley & Jake Curry led the goalkickers and Cooper Robertson, Flynn Cameron & Sam Pitman were dominate around the ground. Particularly pleasing were the performances of the younger players, who have come up from the junior colts.
The one letdown for the day was the 38 point loss to the B/s, Brett Ware kicked 2 goals and Nath Pearce, James ‘Unit’ Barbour & in his first game as a senior player, Joel Dearman were best. The B/s have a lot of young players in the side and there is definitely plenty of improvement to come.
The A/s led all day and ran out comfortable 53 point winners. The star of the day was, of course Jarrod ‘J Train ’ Farrugia in his 200th game. Layton ’ Maxy’ McMahon led the goalkickers with 5, Josh Laube got 4, and newcomer, Jack Mozuras 3. Best players were led by 2017 Best & Fairest, Rob ’ Massive ’ Nicholson, who controlled the ruck all day, Farrugia was ever reliable in defence and another newcomer in Luke ‘Spook’ Tomaselli, won plenty of the ball through the midfield. There was plenty to smile about, the successful return to footy for Laubes led the way, but also the games played by teenagers, Jordy ‘Junior ’ Wake and Ryan ’X-man’ Xanthopoulos, were great to see.
Next week we have our first home game at the newly named ’ Adelaide Retaining Walls’ oval, against reigning premiers, Nairne, the day is also the first of our Sponsors Days and afterwards the annual player auction.
Special thanks to all those that helped out during the day, Gards, Jock, Iceman, Sodes, Spud, Brian Dearman, Steve Carr and some of the senior colts who ran water, Lachy Barrett, James X for running the boundary & Phil Proctor for goal umpiring. We are always short on volunteers so the more people who can help the easier it will be on everyone.
